Federation Cup update: Anabel Medina, “we’re very happy to be here at La Manga Club, they have given us a very warm welcome”, captain of the Spanish team.

MAPFRE Spanish team at La Manga Club

Today the Spanish team, who will compete in the Federation Cup playoff against Paraguay this weekend at the resort’s Tennis Centre, formally presented themselves at La Manga Club.

La Manga Club, 18th of April 2018. Just three days away from the Federation Cup playoff between Spain and Paraguay, which will be disputed at the Tennis Centre La Manga Club, the four contenders in the Spanish team - Garbiñe Muguruza, Carla Suárez, Georgina García-Pérez y María José Martínez – and their captain Anabel Medina posed together for the first time.

Medina and the four players have told us that they are very happy to be at La Manga Club, “we’ve had a great reception, we feel at home here and want to thank them for all the support they’re giving us. In addition, all the tickets are sold out which is fantastic news”, declared the captain.

It’s a particularly special appointment for the tennis player María José Martínez as the Murcia-born athlete has never taken part in a playoff of this kind in the Region.

Based on a priori the Spaniards seem to be the absolute favourites, although Medina has emphasised that they will “face the weekend in a highly professional way, giving our one hundred percent with each hit. Our team has a lot of experience and this is in our favour but competing in the Federation Cup is difficult”. This weekend Spain will fight to keep their place in the World Group II, though it was also recognised that “our team is good enough to be in World Group I and to win the Federation Cup, and we will fight for that”, the captain declared.

Garbiñe Muguruza, number 3 in the world, “I feel well and excited to form part of the team to play against an unknown squad like Paraguay, but that doesn’t mean that it will be easy” stated the player.

The tennis player Georgina García-Pérez was the last to be incorporated into the team, after Lara Arruabarrena pulled out last-minute as a consequence of injury to the wrist.

Tickets SOLD OUT

The centre court at the Tennis Centre La Manga Club will be filled by almost 1.500 spectators. Though additional stands with a capacity of 200 extra people will be installed, tickets were sold out a couple of days ago.

This is the first time since 2004, when Spain won 3-2 against Switzerland, that La Manga Club hosts a Federation Cup playoff.
