Spain win, securing their place in the Federation Cup World Group II at La Manga Club
World No. 3, Garbiñe Muguruza, has sealed Spain’s place in the Federation Cup after her 7-6 / 6-0 victory against Paraguay’s Verónica Cepede at the playoff on Sunday. La Manga Club has experienced a weekend full of emotions and a great atmosphere at the Tennis Centre: almost 1,500 spectators were present at all the matches.
La Manga Club, 22nd of April 2018.- La Manga Club experienced a spectacular weekend at the Tennis Centre. The Federation Cup Spanish team, made up of world No. 3 Garbiñe Muguruza, Carla Suárez, María José Martínez and Georgina García, are to remain in the World Group II after their 3-0 defeat against the Paraguayan team.
The Canary Islands-born tennis player Carla Suárez took charge of opening the playoff on Saturday against Verónica Cepede, the favourite of the Paraguayan team, whom she beat 6-2 / 6-2. Following this came the duel against Garbiñe Muguruza and Montserrat González, a simple a priori encounter for the Spaniard but which ultimately got prolonged for almost three hours. Finally, Muguruza achieved the second point for Spain with a 6-4 / 5-7 / 6-4 score. The first match on Sunday was quite critical for Spain’s continuation. Garbiñe Muguruza and Verónica Cepede jumped onto La Manga Club’s centre clay court with the urge to take that point away with them. The first set was challenging, with an outcome of 7-6, meanwhile in the second set the Spaniard was able to relax finishing with a 6-0 victory. This gave Spain the third and final point.
After this match, the participants had the chance to enjoy a doubles game between the Spaniards María José Martínez and Georgina García and the Paraguayans Verónica Cepede and Montserrat González.
The tennis players on both teams have been training all week on La Manga Club’s courts, sharing the facility with a crowd of fans whom approached them at the Tennis Centre to see them in action. On Thursday they relished a gala dinner at the Principe Felipe 5* Hotel at La Manga Club and, on Friday attended the official draw ceremony at Las Lomas Village 4*. The Spanish players also signed La Manga Club’s Golden Book.
It was the first time that both squads, Spain and Paraguay, faced each other and the second time that Spain have played at home in the last four years. The event was so demanded that all the available seating for the match - 1.480 people, including the centre court seats as well as the additional stand and the VIP box seats – was sold in just a few days.
