Golf at La Manga Club: professional tips on how to play the South Course: Hole 9
The 'hole by hole' guide to La Manga Club. A series of blogs with professional advice on how to play all 18 holes on all three courses: The South, North and the West. We continue with hole 9 on the South Course, our international championship course.
La Manga Club, 07th April 2017. The South Course at La Manga Club course is without doubt the best golf courses in Murcia and one of the best courses in Spain. It has hosted many major professional tournaments, amongst which are various Spanish Opens, PGA Championships and European Tour qualifying schools. It is almost 6500 metres from the white tees, with water hazards on 15 of its 18 holes and few hidden dangers.
The front nine are particularly challenging with two par 3s in excess of 200 metres, and some daunting par 4s which call for accurate driving between lakes and bunkers. The back nine, although shorter, has a number of intriguing dog-leg holes.
Practical tips: how to play hole 9 of the South Course
Par 5 – Handicap 10 – White: 503 metres Yellow: 472 metres Red: 427 metres Blue: 455 metres
Hole 9 on the South Course is a long Par 5 with a dogleg left, driver landing area has various large bunkers on the left as well as on the right. The perfect shot is to swing the driver conservatively between the bunkers on the left and right. Those with a strong swing will have the option to play the driver to the left of the bunker on the left side of the fairway, this will always be the best option when the infamous ‘Lebeche’ wind of this region is not blowing. The second shot, for those with a strong swing as well as the more conservative that have chosen to fly the left bunker, will have to tackle the green. The right side has a large bunker that defends the short flag position, whilst the flags which are located at the end of the green will be defended by the bunker to the left. An ongoing challenge for our expert players.
