There are currently lacrosse teams and leagues in 24 European countries, according to the European Lacrosse Federation. It is also widely played in the United States, Canada, where it is a national sport, and other countries.
It is believed to have originated as a game played by native North American tribes as early as the 15th century. Known as "the fastest game on two feet", it is also said to be one of the fastest growing sports in the world.
La Manga Club's facilities have been used by the Princeton University and England lacrosse teams, amongst others.
