Some 250 people take part in the 16th Senior Tennis Open at La Manga Club
From today, around 250 tennis players are participating in the 16th edition of the popular tennis tournament that achieved Grade 1 two years ago, the best category that an ITF tournament can have. Divided into ten male categories and nine female, the participants will be competing until Saturday.
La Manga Club, 26th November 2018. La Manga Club embraces another year of one of its most popular tournaments: The 16th Senior Tennis Open. The competition starts today and around 250 veteran tennis players will participate until Saturday in various preliminary matches in order to become the best in their category.
Last year, the Tennis Open at La Manga Club reached Grade 1, which is supposedly the highest category level that one can acquire in an ITF tournament. This means that the best players in the ITF ranking will come to play and compete in the tournament at the Tennis Centre complex. According to the director of Tennis, Lorenzo Martínez, "in Spain there is only one competition, other than this one at La Manga Club, that has this category. Furthermore, there are no more than 10 tournaments that take place internationally each year with this category." Martínez added that 'it is not easy to be awarded this grade, given that in order to earn it, you have to start from Grade 4 and make your way up each category by means of complying with some extremely demanding criteria set by the ITF'.
Male and Female Categories
In this edition of the Tennis Open there will be ten male categories segmented by age ranges (+35, +40, +45, +50, +55, +60, +65, +70, +75, +80) and nine female (+35, +40, +45, +50, +55, +60, +65, +70, +75). In both cases, they could compete in games as individuals, doubles and mixed doubles and the results will be ranked by the ITF (International Tennis Federation).
All the participants will aim for the important cash prizes and luxury escapes or sports equipment from top brands.
